July 25 2009    HEAVY RAINFALL

An intense area of heavy rain inundated areas near the Lake Ontario shoreline between 2:30 and 5:00 pm today.  The arrival of the storm was expected due to the combination of high level moisture and energy provided by the sun resulting in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds.  No thunderstorm watch was issued for the Toronto area prior to the heavy rain event since it didn't qualify for the requirement of rainfall >50 mm in 1 hour or less or 75 mm in 3 hours or less.

More specifically, Toronto East York was pounded by heavy rain from 2:43 pm to 5:18 pm.  In fact, at the height of the storm, the area received 1.8 mm in just 60 seconds!   The highest rainfall rate was 144.0 mm/hr occurred at 3:00 pm.

The radar estimate below indicates that most of the rain fell in the southern and eastern side of Toronto.

Although the first three weeks of July was uneventful, Toronto will continue to experience some wet and thundery weather for the remainder of the month.  Here are the rainfall summary for the past four days including readings from the Toronto East York weather station (MADIS-CWOP ID:  DW0132).
