ANALYSIS & FORECAST MODELS
Global Forecast System (GFS)
GFS is a global numerical weather prediction model run by NOAA. It provides daily forecasts of isobars, rainfall and upper level thickness patterns out to 7 days ahead. It is updated once every 12 hours around 1400 EST.
North American Mesoscale (NAM)
NAM, formerly known as ETA, refers to the numerical weather prediction model run by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). It is current run with 12 km horizontal resolution and with 1 hour temporal resolution, providing finer detail than other operational forecast models. It is updated once every 12 hours around 1115 EST.
Rapid Update Cycle (RUC)
RUC output fields are the same as the ETA so that results of the two models can be compared to best estimate the true forecast. It is updated once every 12 hours around 1045 EST.
Nested Grid Model (NGM)
NGM is another regional model and it is updated once every 12 hours around 1115 EST.
European Center for Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF)
The model runs to 7 days and provides data at 24 hour intervals for SLP, 850 mb winds and temperatures, and 50 mb heights. It is updated once a day around 2045 EST.
